Pollutant describes a ‘massive fish kill', which occurred at a fly-fishing reservoir near Bristol in March 1996. Thousands of trout stocked for the start of the new season simply disappeared. During the weeks and months after the incident the consensus among those charged with solving the mystery was that no consensus could be reached. The episode still divides opinion. The video consists of three sections. Each part outlines a theory, proposed by scientists at the time, of how and why the fish died. The telling of each theory is divided between a voiceover, a reconstruction of events – where the camera plays the roles of perpetrator or investigator – and a diagram. The video is structured around stasis and rapid movement. ‘Objective' establishing shots of locations implicated in the narrative – a breeding pond, shed and night time shoreline – are interrupted by violently subjective footage as the camera speeds along the surface of the reservoir and disappears underground.

Pollutant was accompanied by The Whole World Bad, a specially commissioned text by Mark Hutchinson written in response to the video. |

Pollutant continued until 6th May.
